Rules & Eligibility Restrictions

General Rules

The Harvard Invitational Competition is open to all amateur dancers. No school or studio association is required and there are no age restrictions.

Level Restrictions

All level eligibility rules are per style and per role.

Newcomer: A competitor is eligible to dance at the Newcomer Level if he/she has danced for less than 1 full semester (or half year equivalent for non-students). A full semester (or half year equivalent) of dancing includes participating in a competition during that semester or training regularly during that semester. A couple is eligible to dance at the Newcomer Level only if each partner is eligible to dance at the Newcomer Level.

All styles - Bronze Syllabus.

Bronze: A competitor is eligible to dance at the Bronze Level if he/she has danced for no more than 3 full semesters (or half year equivalents for non-students). A full semester (or half year equivalent) of dancing includes participating in a competition during that semester or training regularly during that semester. A couple is eligible to dance at the Bronze Level only if each partner is eligible to dance at the Bronze Level.

Silver: A competitor is eligible to dance at the Silver Level if he/she has not placed out of Silver under the YCN Proficiency Point System. Results from any and all dancesport competitions with professional judges are counted.

Gold: A competitor is eligible to dance at the Gold Level if he/she has not placed out of Gold under the YCN Proficiency Point System. Results from any and all dancesport competitions with professional judges are counted.

The Harvard Ballroom Team has neither the resources nor the ability to check the eligibility of every competitor. We expect teams and competitors to police themselves. If you believe a competitor has violated these rules, please inform us by emailing comp@harvardballroom.org. We will investigate to the best of our ability and take appropriate action. All reports of eligibility violations will be kept strictly confidential.

Double Registration

Competitors may register for two adjacent levels in the same style if, and only if, they are eligible for both levels.

Formation Team

Composition: No eligibility restrictions. Captains or coaches must submit a roster, including reserves, at the time of registration. Substitutions may be made at any point prior to the start of the competition. Team must be made of at least 4 couples and no more than 8 couples. A couple consists of one leader and one follower.

Timing: Each team shall dance for a minimum of three minutes, but shall be limited to a maximum of four and one-half minutes of music for their routine. Up to an additional one and one-half minutes will be allowed for their entrance and exit combined. This adds up to a maximum of six minutes total on and off the floor. The timing of the formation team routine begins when the first person sets foot onto the dance floor. The timing ends when the last person on the team steps off the dance floor.

Music: Music must be submitted to the competition coordinator at the time of registration.

Floor Space: The dance floor available for the formation competition will be 60' x 30'.

Syllabus: Open syllabus, however, no dangerous steps.* The Chairman of Judges will decide if a step is too dangerous.

Judging Criteria: Formation Teams shall be judged on entry and exit of the team, precision and neatness of lines and patterns, presentation and character of the dance(s) performed, and choreography.

Costume Restrictions

Costumes are permitted at all levels except Newcomer. Newcomers may wear off the shelf clothing only, though alterations for fitting are permitted.

Ladies must wear heel taps.* (Available for purchase at the comp)

*Violation of this rule is grounds for immediate disqualification!
